The area was once home to several small to mid sized industrial businesses involved in manufacturing and services, including boat manufacturing and wholesale distribution. Unfortunately, as those companies found success, many of them outgrew their modest facilities, and as Metro Vancouver continued to grow, access and distribution around the region became more difficult.

As the light industry moved out, Murray Street had a number of vacant properties, looking for some new uses, and the burgeoning Craft Beer industry arrived in Port Moody with Yellow Dog Brewing opening first ,followed by Moody Ales, Parkside, Twin Sails, Bakery Brewing (now Brave) and Rewind. The 'row' also includes a distillery, Rocky Point Spirits.
The businesses are known for how they all work together and support each other, and how they have changed the dynamics of an area once dark and desolate into an area teaming with people and activity.

Welcome to PoMoHistory.org !

We are trying to create a 'people driven' history of Port Moody, mainly because we think Port Moody is a great place, with some amazing history, but that much of it isn't being captured, and what is is often limited scope.

We know there are lots of great stories out there and we welcome everyone to contribute your stories

The site is a Wiki which everyone is likely familiar with, and will always be a 'live site' with information being added as things change or new contributions are made.

The intent is to organize the site into general categories of PEOPLE, PLACES and THINGS.

Hopefully this site can be where the answer to those questions we all hear every day ... 'What ever happened to...' , 'What was the old building on Murray Street that made TVs ?' , 'When did the Kyle Centre open ?' ...

There's a lot of information out there, hopefully some of what is here is of value and interesting.

Let's keep it fun... but TRUE please.

Anything posted that is deemed to be defamatory, demeaning, insulting, etc. will be edited or removed... there's no lawyers here and we don't want there to have to be.

Yellow Dog Brewing was the first Craft Bewery to open in Port Moody, on what has come to be known as Brewers Row (Murray Street near Rocky Point Park)

In the summer of 2014, Mike and Melinda Coghill opened up Port Moody’s very first craft brewery to bring great beer and a family atmosphere to Port Moody. Mike and Melinda were both working in 'corporate jobs' and wanted to get into a business that was fun, social and wasn't consumed with the regular corporate chase of profits and bottom line.

The Yellow Dog image was in honour of their long time furry family member, Chase, who is featured prominently in the operation.

Mike, Melinda and Yellow Dog continue to support the SPCA, with many initiatives through the brewery, and their adoption of rescue dogs.

Embraced by the community, where the marketing of 'Yellow Dog' has been incredibly successful, Yellow Dog has grown into one of BC largest breweries, and has anchored the growth of the Craft Beer scene in Port Moody on 'Brewers Row'.

The master brewer, Liam Murphy, has been with Yellow Dog since the beginning and now heads our brewing team and with a focus on high quality and innovative beers. The singular focus on the quality of beer has led to many awards and a strong following for our core offerings.

Yellow Dog beers are found locally and afar at bars and restaurants, in liquor stores, and in the tasting room on Murray Street.
The Boathouse Restaurant Port Moody is located in Rocky Point Park, and was opened in September 2007.

The concept of a restaurant in Rocky Point Park had long been discussed by Port Moody City Council , and the process leading up to the 2007 opening began with a report from the city 'Rocky Point Park Multi Use Task Force' in 1999. Different ideas and iterations of the restaurant, where it would be located, size, style, etc. were debated and in 2003 a recommendation was put to Council from the Parks and Recreation Commission for a 'fine dining' restaurant to be included in Rocky Point Park.

A number of applications and ideas were presented to the City by restaurant operators, with the Spectra Group eventually being awarded the opportunity for the Boathouse Restaurant.

The process in Port Moody was quite politically contentious with concerns about loss of public park land to a private company, impacts on the boat launch and pier, and the process of selecting the future operator - a very popular local seafood restaurant was one of the final contenders for the opportunity but were not selected, resulting in lawsuits.

The building and many improvements to the boat launch parking were done by the Private company, at their expense, with lease terms that provided for the occupation of the building at a yearly base lease of $ 45,000 plus a percentage of sales over 3 million annually. The lease was a 30 year term with the option to renew 2 10 year addtional terms.

Spectra subsequently sold the Boathouse restaurants to McCormick and Schmicks in 2004, which later sold the Boathouse Restaurant chain to the Landry Group in 2011.

Landry closed the Horseshoe Bay Boathouse in 2016, and closed the English Bay Boathouse restaurant in 2018

Boathouse restaurants continue to operate in New Westminster, White Rocky, and Kitsilano.

Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Clement_Moody

Richard Clement Moody - (13 February 1813 – 31 March 1887) was a British colonial governor and Commander of the Royal Engineers. He was the founder and the first Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia; and the Commanding Executive Officer of Malta during the Crimean War; and the first British Governor of the Falkland Islands.

Moody founded the Colony of British Columbia, after he was selected to 'found a second England on the shores of the Pacific' by Sir Edward Bulwer-Lytton: who desired to send to the nascent colony the 'representatives of the best of British culture' who had 'courtesy, high breeding, and urbane knowledge of the world'. The British Government deemed Moody to be the definitive 'English gentleman and British Officer'. Moody's original title was 'Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works for British Columbia', before he was redesignated first Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, as which he founded the capital of British Columbia, New Westminster, and he has been described as 'the real father of New Westminster'.

Moody also founded the Cariboo Road and Stanley Park, and named Burnaby Lake after his secretary Robert Burnaby and Port Coquitlam's 400-foot 'Mary Hill' after his wife, Mary Hawks. He also designed the first Coat of Arms of British Columbia.

Port Moody, and Moody Park and Moody Square in New Westminster, are named after him.

He was also the first Governor of the Falkland Islands, and founded their capital Port Stanley. Moody Brook in the Falkland Islands, and Moody Point in Antarctica are named after him.

Moody was a polymath who excelled in engineering, architecture, and music. He planned the restoration of Edinburgh Castle using musical chords, for which he was summoned to Windsor Castle for commendation by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. He has been described as 'a visionary in a plain land' and 'a man who could conceive of Edinburgh Castle in terms of a musical score'.
