Boathouse Restaurant Port Moody

From PomoHistoryOrg

The Boathouse Restaurant Port Moody is located in Rocky Point Park, and was opened in September 2007.

The concept of a restaurant in Rocky Point Park had long been discussed by Port Moody City Council , and the process leading up to the 2007 opening began with a report from the city 'Rocky Point Park Multi Use Task Force' in 1999. Different ideas and iterations of the restaurant, where it would be located, size, style, etc. were debated and in 2003 a recommendation was put to Council from the Parks and Recreation Commission for a 'fine dining' restaurant to be included in Rocky Point Park.

A number of applications and ideas were presented to the City by restaurant operators, with the Spectra Group eventually being awarded the opportunity for the Boathouse Restaurant.

The process in Port Moody was quite politically contentious with concerns about loss of public park land to a private company, impacts on the boat launch and pier, and the process of selecting the future operator - a very popular local seafood restaurant was one of the final contenders for the opportunity but were not selected, resulting in lawsuits.

The building and many improvements to the boat launch parking were done by the Private company, at their expense, with lease terms that provided for the occupation of the building at a yearly base lease of $ 45,000 plus a percentage of sales over 3 million annually. The lease was a 30 year term with the option to renew 2 10 year addtional terms.

Spectra subsequently sold the Boathouse restaurants to McCormick and Schmicks in 2004, which later sold the Boathouse Restaurant chain to the Landry Group in 2011.

Landry closed the Horseshoe Bay Boathouse in 2016, and closed the English Bay Boathouse restaurant in 2018

Boathouse restaurants continue to operate in New Westminster, White Rocky, and Kitsilano.
